Bold New Strategic Direction: Expanding Services Statewide to Better Serve TK-12 Parents
Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco (PPS-SF), a leading educational equity advocacy and support nonprofit, today announced a bold new strategic direction. Building on decades of service in San Francisco, PPS-SF will expand its programs statewide to reach more families in need, while sharpening its focus on the communities too often left behind.
"This is an exciting moment for Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco (PPS-SF)," said Dr. Vanessa Marrero, President of the Board of Directors of the organization. "For years, we've served San Francisco with enrollment workshops, town halls, forums, policy translation, parent to parent blogs and social media updates." But the need is far greater, and we are committed to expanding our reach statewide to create a more equitable educational system for all."
Founding Purpose
Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco (PPS-SF) was originally founded in 1999 by two parents as a grassroots movement to strengthen and sustain public schools for all children. At a time when many families were leaving public schools, parents came together to push back against inequities, promote engagement, and ensure that every child—regardless of race, income, or background—could thrive in a strong public education system.
“The San Francisco chapter has carried this mission forward, rooted in the belief that public schools are a fundamental part of our democracy and this shift is critical in shaping a just and inclusive education system across our state.” Luz Huallanca, Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco (PPSSF) Board Director
Key components of this strategic shift include:
Shifting Operations to a Remote, Community-Based Model: To maximize resources and better serve communities across the state, Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco (PPS-SF), will be shifting our operations to a distributed work model. This shift allows us to redirect resources directly to program delivery and community engagement in the regions we serve. "Considering the immense challenges immigrant communities face, including ICE raids, school privatization, dwindling enrollment, and looming school closures, our expansion is essential. These issues jeopardize democratic rights, protections, and access to public education. We are committed to enhancing accessibility and channeling more resources into programs and services that best serve our communities at this critical time. This model ensures our presence where community members need us most, delivering support right in their neighborhoods." - Dr. Vanessa Marrero, Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco (PPS-SF)
Strong Board Leadership: As we embrace our next chapter, ensuring leadership continuity is paramount. We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Marrero, who has dedicated over four years to PPS, is now serving as President of the Board of Directors. Dr. Marrero has been a trailblazer, being the first San Francisco executive director appointed to the prestigious Regional Advisory Committee for the West, covering states like California, Utah, Arizona, and Nevada, advising the US Department of Education. In December 2023, she published the critical "Identifying and Addressing Priority and Education Needs" on the federal registrar.
Under her leadership, participation and collaboration soared by 150% through her strategic outreach efforts, establishing partnerships with over 400 organizations, including county offices, school districts, and community colleges across the state. Her leadership continues to shape the future of education with innovation and inclusivity.
"Dr. Marrero’s leadership has allowed the organization to scale more effectively, hone in on community leaders and ensure long-term sustainability- ensuring we have the expertise and capacity to effectively deliver our services throughout the state." Noah Sloss, Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco (PPS-SF) Board Secretary
Benefits to the Community: This strategic direction is expected to bring significant benefits to communities across the state, including:
San Francisco strategy and programs are remaining in place: parent mentoring , enrollment and school readiness workshops, policy translation services, #BoardWatch and Board Elevate, community outreach and development, blogs, school advocacy and strategic partnerships with SFUSD.
Increased Access to Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco (PPS-SF): Expanding statewide will provide more individuals and families in underserved areas with access to critical resources and support.
Continuance of Strong Leadership: With Dr. Marrero serving as President, we have a unique opportunity to carry forward our vision while ensuring that our organization is guided by thoughtful, strategic, and bold leadership—exactly what our communities deserve. Her stewardship will continue to inspire progress and ensure that our mission remains impactful and forward-thinking.
Enhanced Community Engagement: A community-based model will allow Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco (PPS-SF), to build stronger relationships with local communities and tailor services to meet their specific needs.
“PPS-SF remains focused on San Francisco families, particularly families with the least access to representation and resources. Many students face challenges: nearly 14% need special education, over 25% are English learners, 52% qualify for free or reduced lunch, 54% socioeconomically disadvantaged, and 36% come from immigrant families. With many children in single-parent households and non-English speaking homes, PPS-SF will continue to bridge and advocate for cross-sector solutions to close opportunity gaps. - Virginia Cheung, PPS-SF Board Director
Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco (PPS-SF), is committed to working collaboratively with partners, stakeholders, and community members to ensure a smooth and successful transition.
