OFFICIAL STATEMENT: United in Support: Call for Protection of Immigrant Families

As the first year of the new Trump administration's power unfolds, the threat to immigrant families across the country, including in San Francisco, has become increasingly urgent. San Francisco has long been a sanctuary city, standing as a champion for immigrant rights and inclusion. Now, more than ever, we must act swiftly and decisively to protect our immigrant students and families within San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) and San Francisco County Office of Education (SFCOE).
We commend the commitments made by Attorney General Rob Bonta, Governor Gavin Newsom, and the previous Biden-Harris Administration to safeguard immigrant communities. However, recent federal and state policy shifts necessitate that we strengthen our local efforts.
Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco has worked collaboratively with SFUSD to emphasize the importance of clear communication, accessible resources, and operational support for immigrant families. Given the challenges posed by budget deficits, staffing shortages, and potential policy changes, it is critical that we establish an Immigration Education Work Group to coordinate resources, guide our school district strategies, and address risks proactively and coherently.
"Comprehensive support, both within and beyond our schools, is critical to protect our immigrant families. We urge the creation of an Immigration Education Work Group—experts in law, education, and community—to guide policy, provide resources, and ensure ongoing risk assessment for our school campuses." - Dr. Vanessa Danielle Marrero, President, Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco.
Additionally, we urge city leaders to implement action-based strategies that inform and empower families during these uncertain times—emphasizing their rights, protections, and avenues for support. Furthermore, hosting public opportunities can provide educators and families with practical information and strategies to ensure safety, inclusion, and resilience.
San Francisco’s strength lies in its diversity and unwavering commitment to justice. Let us act now to protect its immigrant families, uphold their rights, and reaffirm our city’s values as a true sanctuary for all.
