Upcoming Board of Education Meetings

There Is a Regular Board Meeting on Tuesday, a Rules, Policy and Legislation Committee meeting Wednesday, and a Joint Ad Hoc SFUSD and CCSF Committee Meeting Thursday.

Board of Education meeting: Tuesday, June 12, 2018

Agenda for the meeting here.

Action items:

  • The board will vote to approve or deny the charter petition of Mary L. Booker Leadership Academy Charter School, proposed to be located in the Bayview.

    • The SFUSD board of education must grant or deny the charter petition within a specified time period. If the board denies the petition, the charter school may go to the California State Board of Education and seek to have the petition granted there.

    • If the petition is granted by either SFUSD or the State Board of Education, a charter school can request to use buildings and land owned by SFUSD. Under Proposition 39, authorized by voters in 2000, districts are required to share unused space with charter schools. This can mean that charter schools are given space within existing public schools.

  • The board will vote on a policy update on "Transfer of Funds," increasing the limit on transfers that can be made by the Superintendent without board approval from $8,000 to $50,000 with a goal of decreasing delays in procuring needed services.

  • The board will suspend the rules to take immediate action on two proposals:

    • The first would bring SFUSD board support to State Senate Bill 221 "Prohibiting the Sale of Firearms and Ammunition at the State-Owned Cow Palace in Daly City"

    • The second is a resolution called "Cannabis Free Schools" that would limit Cannabis related advertising near schools, support policies prohibiting the sale of Cannabis to underage consumers and commit to educating students about dangers of cannabis usage .

Informational items:

  • Update on the San Francisco Alliance for My Brother's and Sister's Keeper

  • Update on "In Support of the Achievement and Success of All African American Students in the San Francisco Unified School District"

  • The Parent Advisory Council will give formal feedback on the district's Local Control and Accountability Plan

Public Comment

There is always an opportunity for public comment at school board meetings.

At regular meetings, speakers may speak to any item being voted on or may give general public comment during the time reserved for "Public Comment on General Matters." Speakers must sign up in advance, either by calling the board office at (415) 241-6493 or filling out a speaker card at the meeting and handing it to Esther Casco, the executive assistant to the board, who sits next to the podium. Speaker cards must be turned in before the agenda item being spoken to is officially "called."

At committee meetings, those wishing to speak may sign up in advance or simply approach the podium when the committee chair calls for public comment.

Members of the public are typically allowed two minutes to speak, but the time given may be shorter if there are a large number of speakers.
