Privacy Policy

Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco, Inc. (“PPS-SF” or “we”, “us” or “our”) values your privacy.  This Privacy Policy (“Privacy Policy”) describes what information we collect and how it is used and shared.  This Privacy Policy applies to all of the information we collect across our entire organization, including, without limitation, at enrollment fairs and workshops, PPS-SF trainings and events, community and school events, open houses, and through this website or any of our other websites, newsrooms, listservs, social media, blogs or forums.

We have established this Privacy Policy to explain and help you better understand what information we gather from you, how we handle the information once we gather it, whether we disclose it to anyone, and the control you have regarding the information.

1. Personal Information.

As described in more detail below, we collect Personal Information (as defined below) primarily to provide targeted information and resources to parents of children in the San Francisco United School District, to engage, educate and connect them, and to optimize their experience in connection with their use of the PPS-SF Materials (as defined in our Terms and Conditions of Use).  “Personal Information,” as used in our Privacy Policy, is information that identifies an individual, such as first and last name, personal characteristics (including photographic image, fingerprints or other biometric data), mailing address, email address or other online contact information, driver license number, identification number (e.g. passport or social security number) or telephone number.  

By accessing or using the PPS-SF Materials, you and other users may make available to us certain Personal Information.  You are not required to create a user account or provide any Personal Information in order to access many of the PPS-SF Materials.  You can decline to provide any information at any time.  You may be required to create a user account, however, to receive to our literature, participate in certain activities or to take advantage of other resources provided through the PPS-SF Materials.  For example, you will not be able to register for an account with us, join our forum or blog discussion, or receive certain newsletters or communications unless you register and create an account.  During registration, you may be asked to provide certain categories of personally identifiable information, such as your name, address, email address and date of birth, and current schools that your children attend, which information helps us communicate with you about PPS-SF news and events.  We may also contact you occasionally to obtain feedback from you through customer surveys or invite you to our in-person events, but you are not obligated to participate in such surveys or events if you do not wish to do so.  If you choose to participate in our surveys or events, you may also supply to us your Personal Information.

We do not knowingly collect Personal Information from users under the age of 13.  If we determine we have inadvertently gathered Personal Information from a user under the age of 13, we will promptly delete any and all such Personal Information from our records. The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 and other similar laws have been established to protect the privacy of minors and we will abide by all applicable federal and state laws and guidelines regarding youth privacy.

 

2. Passive Collection of Information.

In addition, your Personal Information may be collected automatically when you access or use the PPS-SF Materials.  The types of passive information collected may include your IP address, which type of browser you are using, which parts of the PPS-SF Materials you access and other information related to your use of and online traffic patterns. This passive information does not identify you to us by name, and we do not link your IP address to your personally identifiable information.

In addition to the methods described above, we may also collect information using cookies, web beacons or other technologies.  Cookies and other technologies make the PPS-SF Materials easier to use and help us customize and personalize the PPS-SF Materials based on users’ interests and activities.  Cookies are small files placed on your hard drive that assist us in providing customized services; You are always free to decline our cookies if your browser permits, although in that case you may not be able to use certain features made available through our websites or the PPS-SF Materials.  

 

3. Use of Information.

Generally, we use Personal Information to provide our users a smooth, efficient, and customized experience when visiting our websites or when using the PPS-SF Materials.  Below, we provide some specific and non-limiting examples of how we use the Personal Information and other user information we collect to establish and enhance our relationship with our users:

  • We use user information, including Personal Information, to provide our users with support, respond to users’ requests, send newsletters and updates, and seek users’ opinions and feedback;
  • We use user information, including Personal Information, behavioral metrics, and other non-personally identifiable information to operate, provide, improve, and maintain the PPS-SF Materials, to provide users new resources, to prevent abuse and fraud, and for other internal administrative purposes;
  • We use user information, including behavioral metrics and geo-location data to personalize and display targeted resources for our users; and
  • We use user information, including Personal Information and any other information submitted directly from our users or collected through passive means, to provide you with various ways to connect and share content with third parties.  

 

4. Sharing of Information.

We do not rent or sell email addresses, phone numbers, or other Personal Information of our users.  We do not share your Personal Information with third parties except in the limited circumstances described below:

  1. Service Providers.  We may allow third-party service providers to access your Personal Information or other information for their use in performing services for us.  We require such third-parties to only collect and use Personal Information in accordance with our Privacy Policy, to maintain the confidentiality, security, and integrity of such Personal Information, and for no purpose other than providing us with our requested services.  Additionally, we may use third-party service providers to analyze our users’ use of the PPS-SF Materials.  Such service provides us with aggregated data in order to help us make informed decisions to better engage, educate and connect our users.  
  2. Legal Requirements.  We may disclose your Personal Information and other information if we have a good-faith belief that doing so is required by a subpoena, warrant, or other judicial or administrative order or otherwise required by law.  Additionally, we may disclose your Personal Information and other information where we, in good faith, deem it appropriate or necessary to (1) prevent violation of the Terms of Use, or our other agreements; (2) take precautions against liability; (3) protect our rights, property, or safety, or those of a third party, any individual or the general public; (4) maintain and protect the security and integrity of the PPS-SF Materials or our infrastructure; (5) protect ourselves and the PPS-SF Materials from fraudulent, abusive, or unlawful uses; (6) investigate and defend ourselves against third party claims or allegations; or (7) assist government agencies.

 

5. Public Forums. 

If you use any of our newsrooms, listservs, social media, blogs, or forums, including bulletin boards, chat rooms or any other platform or technology that allows you to interact with other users by using the PPS-SF Materials, you should be aware that any Personal Information you submit, display, or publish is considered publicly available and can be read, collected, used, and disclosed by other users of those features, by us, and other third parties without restriction.  To request removal of your Personal Information from any forum, you may contact us at the mailing or email address provided at the end of this document.  Please note, however, that in some cases we may not be able to remove your Personal Information, in which case we will let you know if we are unable to do so and why.  We nonetheless assume no responsibility for modifying or removing any Personal Information you submit, display, or publish through your use of the PPS-SF Materials.

 

6. Third Party Websites.

The PPS-SF Materials may contain links to third-party websites.  These third parties may also collect information from you in connection with your use of their sites.  This Privacy Policy only addresses the use and disclosure of information we collect from you.  To the extent that you disclose your information to any third parties, different rules may apply to their use or disclosure of your information.  Our Privacy Policy does not apply to the practices of companies that we do not own or control, or to people that we do not employ or manage.  Please check the privacy policy at each website you visit.

 

7. Opt-Out Option.  

If you want to remove yourself from individual communications, including updates and newsletters from PPS-SF, simply click the unsubscribe link in the communication.  You acknowledge and agree that there may be instances where we may elect to notify you about administrative notices regarding your PPS-SF account, such as to inform you about changes to our terms, conditions, and policies, or to provide you with other relevant administrative information about your account.  Because this information is important to your interaction with us, you may not opt out of receiving these communications.

 

8. Data Integrity and Security.

We take industry standard measures, including the implementation and maintenance of physical, electronic, and managerial procedures, in an effort to safeguard the security and integrity of all Personal Information that we store.  Our efforts include procedures designed to avoid unauthorized access, alteration, misuse or disclosure of your Personal Information.  

Although we make good faith efforts to protect your Personal Information, we cannot guarantee that it will remain free from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, or alteration.  Further, while we work hard to ensure the integrity and security of our network and systems, we cannot guarantee that our security measures will prevent “hackers” or other unauthorized persons from illegally accessing or obtaining your Personal Information.  Therefore, although we use industry standard practices to protect your privacy, we do not promise, and you should not expect, that your Personal Information will always remain private.

If we learn of a security breach, we may attempt to notify you electronically so that you can take appropriate protective steps.  By accessing or using the PPS-SF Materials, you agree and acknowledge that we can communicate with you electronically regarding security, privacy and administrative issues relating to your account information and usage.

 

9. Aggregate Data.

We may compile aggregated data by combining information from many users, without including any information that could be used to identify you or anyone else by name.  You agree and acknowledge that we may use and disclose to third parties aggregate data in a non-personally identifiable manner for any purposes (including for promotion of PPS-SF or the PPS-SF Materials).

 

10. International Users.

The PPS-SF Materials are hosted on websites in the United States.  If you access or use the PPS-SF Materials from the European Union, or other jurisdictions with laws governing data collection, use or sharing that may differ from United States law, please note that you are transferring your Personal Information outside of those jurisdictions to the United States and the United States does not have the same data protection laws as the European Union and such other jurisdictions.  By accessing or using the PPS-SF Materials , you consent to the use of your Personal Information in accordance with our Privacy Policy and the transfer of your Personal Information to the United States.

 

11. Amendments to Policy

Please note our Privacy Policy may change from time to time.  We encourage you to review our Privacy Policy prior to each visit to any of our websites so that you stay informed about our updated collection, use and disclosure practices of your Personal Information.

We reserve the right, in our sole and absolute discretion, to amend our Privacy Policy at any time by posting a revised version on www.ppssf.org or elsewhere in the PPS-SF Materials.  All amended terms shall automatically become effective when they are initially posted on our websites or as noted in the PPS-SF Materials.  We last modified our Privacy Policy on the date first stated above.  If we make any material changes to our Privacy Policy that affect user information already stored in our database, we will post a prominent notice on www.ppssf.org notifying users that our Privacy Policy has changed.  

Our use of your Personal Information shall be governed by the terms and conditions of our Privacy Policy in effect at the time of such use.  Your continued access to or use of the PPS-SF Materials after the posting of updates constitutes your agreement to abide by our updated Privacy Policy.  If you object to any of the terms of our updated Privacy Policy, please immediately discontinue accessing or using the PPS-SF Materials.
