Apply Online or by Mail by 4/10 for SFUSD May Placement (Round 2)

Families who received a San Francisco public school assignment they are not satisfied with can submit an application for the May Placement Period (formerly know as “Round 2”) by April 10, 2020. This is also the deadline to file a Placement Appeal.

May Placement Period (Round 2)

Anyone can participate in the May Placement Period by submitting an application online or by mail by the April 10, 2020 deadline. Please note that at this time there is no in-person option to enroll in schools or submit a May Placement application.

You should only submit a May Placement period application if you did not submit an application by the January 17, 2020 deadline, or if you would like to apply for one or more schools that you prefer to the school you were assigned.

If you already have a school assignment, do not list schools that you like less than the one you were assigned! If you receive a school that you apply for through the May Placement process, you will automatically be taken out of your previously assigned school, even if you registered.

May placement letters will be mailed on May 15, 2020 and you will have until May 29 to register at your new assigned school. Note: If you received a placement in March, you are not guaranteed a new placement in the May Placement process.

Online Process (New!)

Complete and submit the May Placement application online at sfusd.edu/onlineapp. You must have a Family Portal (ParentVUE) account to enroll. If you have an existing Family Portal account, just login. If you are new to SFUSD, please create a new account. SFUSD sent separate letters containing activation codes by mail dated March 16, 2020. Fill out this help form if you didn’t get an activation code or need help logging on.

You can use a computer or mobile device to apply. You will need:

  • A picture ID of the student’s parent/guardian

  • List of schools and programs to apply to

  • An activated Family Portal (ParentVUE) account.

  • Proof of child’s birth such as birth certificate or hospital record. (New to SFUSD applicants only)

  • Proof of Home Address that contains the name of the parent/guardian. (New to SFUSD applicants or those who have recently moved)

Complete instructions for completing the online application are in this document.

After you submit your application you will be sent an acceptance email once your online application has been reviewed and accepted. Note that this only means your application was deemed complete and is different from the assignment to a school.

If you wish to make changes to your online application, you must submit an Application Revision Form by the April 10, 2020 deadline.

Mail-in Process (New!)

Download, print, and fill out the May Placement Application form (available here starting March 20, 2020) and send them along with required documents to:

Educational Placement Center
555 Franklin Street
San Francisco 94102

Mail must be postmarked by April 10, 2020.

EPC staff will email you to confirm receipt of your application.

Appeals

The appeals process can be used by those who face special circumstances. There are two types of appeals:

  • Medical Appeal: for a student whose own medical condition cannot be accommodated appropriately at the assigned school.

  • Family Hardship Appeal: for a student whose family faces a unique hardship within the household.

Decisions are made by a committee, and their decision is final. Applications should include as much documentation as possible to make a compelling case for the student's or the family's unique situation. The case should focus on why the specific requested school would meet the family's needs in a way that the assigned school would not. Families may appeal for placement into one school. Submit the Appeal Form and paperwork for the appeal, together with a May Placement Period application, by April 10, 2020. Even though only one school may be requested on the appeal, include any options preferred over the initial assignment in the May Placement Period application.

Here are some upcoming key dates to remember:
