We, the Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco—students, families, educators, community members, and organizations in San Francisco—unite in opposition to the San Francisco Unified School District’s proposal to close our neighborhood schools. This plan does not address budgetary issues and threatens our communities, with lasting repercussions. We call on the Board of Education to urgently reject these closures.
The decision-making process surrounding this proposal has favored those with access to power, undermining a just and equitable evaluation. Parents from racial and economic groups most affected by closures were significantly underrepresented in the district’s RAI Phase II survey, which received nearly 10,000 responses.
Currently, our district comprises 51.3% Significant Economically Disadvantaged students and 28.5% English Learners. Alarmingly, 60% of schools cater to these disadvantaged populations, with 84% of schools facing low enrollment located in Districts 8, 9, 10, and 11.
The 2026 SFUSD Fiscal Stabilization Plan indicates that 2,500 students ride the bus from CTIP areas to their school of choice. Analysis by Stanford revealed a significant mismatch between survey respondents and the student population, highlighting that those most affected were under-represented. The plan appears to prioritize justifications for closures and consolidations from the most vulnerable populations. Our community has not been allowed to provide genuine community input as stated in California Education Code (EC) Section 52069.
"As a product of public education in the Bronx, I experienced firsthand the critical support from my principal and social worker, who created safe spaces that allowed me to engage fully in my learning. Now, as President of PPS-SF, I see the impact of cutting critical services as a significant threat to our students. Closing our schools isn’t a solution—it’s a step backward. By uniting as a community and listening to the voices directly impacted by these decisions, we can create a brighter future for our children," states Dr. Vanessa Marrero, President of Parents for Public Schools of San Francisco.
Schools are vital community hubs, providing education, support, and a sense of belonging. Closing them dismantles these essential resources. We urge the Board of Education and the Board of Supervisors to listen to the voices of affected families and reject these detrimental school closures. Together, we can protect the future of our communities.
