Jose Guevara Student advisor, Athletics Director

11 years at Everett MS

2) What resources are offered here for students?

We have all types of resources for students. We have after-school programs and before school. They offer appointments directly with a Meda staff member on site. They offer connections and referrals to outside CBOs. For example, we have direct referrals to Latino Task Force, Casa de las Madres, shelters, and food banks. Through our wellness center, we offer a variety of health education and therapy.

3)     What do they believe makes public schools successful?

Fully funded schools and fully hired schools. Too many open positions all over the city. Good leadership from superintendent to principals on site. Facilities where issues are not a distraction to student learning.

4)     Where have they seen improvement in school readiness?

After the pandemic, they have seen more parents who would want mental health services for their students. They have pushed to have more therapists come in to help students and families. Mental health has been a priority for our students and families

5)     Can they recount a positive experience while working at their school?

Yes, all the time. In the hallway, in the yard, or the classroom. So many positive things happen with our kids daily. I'm not saying there are no struggles.

Students grow and make mistakes when they can learn from them, making the experience worth it. Every year during graduation he sees those students who struggle a little bit more than others. But they made it on stage with all the obstacles they had, and those moments are very memorable.
