Attend a Community Town Hall on SFUSD's Budget Balancing Process

Learn about SFUSD’s current budget-balancing process and timeline and how families and community members can engage with budget planning throughout the school year

What is the budget-balancing process and why hold a meeting now?

You may have heard SFUSD is experiencing a structural deficit. What does that mean? Even before the pandemic, the district’s expenditures exceeded its revenue. Current projections show estimated deficits of at least $125M for the districts’ next fiscal year, 2022-23

The state has directed SFUSD to submit a balancing plan for the District by December 15, 2021. The plan may impact staffing and services that are being provided both directly to students through reductions in positions working with students and indirectly through reductions to central support services for schools.

The details of the proposed balancing plan have been informed primarily data and input that is already available, including many years of LCAP community engagement. The Community Town Hall on November 30 will be an opportunity for District leaders to address the families and community directly, answer questions and hear concerns and feedback. It will be the first of several opportunities for community input, both at the district and school level, between now and the adoption of the District’s final 22-23 budget in late June, 2022.
