SFUSD Reopening Readiness Dashboard

At the latest Board of Education (BOE) meeting, Superintendent Matthews introduced the new SFUSD Reopening Readiness Dashboard. The dashboard has been created in an effort to keep families updated on the school reopening progress. As a response to a lack of transparency expressed by families, the dashboard was implemented on October 19th and will be continually updated bi-weekly. With the new dashboard, families can monitor the steps that are being taken on the administrative level to reopen schools.

Outlined in the dashboard are the major areas of work SFUSD is undertaking to prepare for a phased-in approach to in-person learning. Each task shows a breakdown on the progress when you click on the specific task item on the dashboard. Each area of work has a “Status” section to determine how close they are to completing the task. The status section is color coordinated, with each color representing the amount of progress that has been made.

Currently, the dashboard displays the work happening to prepare schools for a safe reopening for small groups of students in Tier 1 (Phase 2A). Phase 2A is focused on reopening efforts for kindergarten students and students with disabilities in moderate/severe special day classes. Check out the Reopening Readiness Dashboard for Phase 2A here.

In the BOE meeting, Superintendent Matthews stated that the administration hoped to reopen schools for small groups by the end of the year but no longer sees this as a possibility. He stated, "We do not anticipate bringing students back before the end of the calendar year. Our hope is over the next 8 weeks, we can get these areas as close to green as possible." SFUSD administration is keeping safety as the number one priority in this process. While explaining the difficulty in finding the best possible pathway to a safe reopening, Superintendent Matthews exclaimed, “We are an education institution that is now being asked to be a testing agency ... This is not what the system was created for.”
