Mark your calendars for the Friday night SFUSD Community Celebration at the de Young Museum May 14th 5pm to 8pm. The entire School District community, staff, parents, students and community members are invited to join us that evening in celebrating the creative and artistic accomplishments of San Francisco students. This year the week long Young at Art festival May 8-16, 2010 at the de Young Museum and Golden Gate Park will feature 57 performances by dance groups, choral ensembles, jazz and concert bands, orchestras and theater classes. All performances are by students for students, with adults facilitating the process. Over 9,500 students attended the nine day 2009 festival at the de Young Museum to perform, see their artwork, to listen to their peers read their literary works as authors and to view films made by youth. The performances are held in the band shell (the Spreckles Temple of Music) in the Golden Gate Park music concourse and in the de Young Museum’s Koret Theater. Classes are invited to come on field trips during the school day May 11, 12, 13, and 14. Students will participate in art activities, visit the exhibitions and attend performances. Field trips may be booked in advance or classes are welcome to come anytime during the festival on a drop in basis including a museum visit. | Grattan: Author Po Bronson, "Nurtureshock: New Thinking About Children" Join us on Monday, May 17 at 6:30 pm to hear Po Bronson speak at Grattan about his new book, NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children. This event is free and open to the public. NurtureShock is a groundbreaking collaboration between award-winning science journalists Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman. They argue that when it comes to children, we've mistaken good intentions for good ideas. With impeccable storytelling and razorsharp analysis, Bronson and Merryman demonstrate that many of modern society's strategies for nurturing children are in fact backfiring—because key twists in the science have been overlooked. Grattan School is located at 165 Grattan Street in Cole Valley. Doors open at 6:30 for purchase of books, coffee, and sweets. Copies of NurtureShock will be available for purchase courtesy of The Booksmith. 20% of your purchase benefits Grattan! |
