From Dana Woldow, Chairperson of SFUSD Student Nutrition and Physical Activity Committee:
"Credit for the success of the SFUSD Student Nutrition Committee in pushing forward with a healthier menu for our kids is shared among many PPS members who were working on this issue before Caroline and I got involved, including Hydra Mendoza, Kate Steinheimer, Colleen Kavanagh, Julie Hagelshaw, Maribeth Goldstein and Dr. Mel Heyman, as well as the many parents and community members who continue to work with the Nutrition Committee today."
Post from the PPS listserve from PPS-SF Member and PE Teacher, Chris Loughran:
While teaching my 5th graders last week how to do push ups for the State Fitness Assessment the girls asked why do we need to do PE? We talked about the benefits of doing exercises including push ups and other things. They didn’t believe me when I said all the hip hop, movie and TV stars all workout and they pay about $100+/hour for personal trainers to help them. They were shocked that exercise could make you look so good and they can get it for free in school. They thought it was not eating a lot of food that made them look great. We as parents need to be the role models and not the Hollywood stars. Kids need to see parents taking care of their health through exercise too. Point out to kids when you see a picture of P. Diddy (is that his name) running a marathon, the mayor out running, or others exercising. We need to help change the perception.
