School tours are a good way to get to know a school’s staff, principal, parents, students and facilities, to see if it is a good fit for your family. You can also get to know a school by attending its events. See our Calendar for upcoming school events and Open Houses.

Things to notice on a tour:
School Environment
How are you greeted when you enter a school? By whom?
Is access to the school secure?
Are the buildings and grounds clean and safe?
Do you find the grounds aesthetically pleasing?
Is student work displayed in the classrooms? Hallways?
Are the play-structures safe and age appropriate?
Is the size of the school appropriate for your child?
Supervision
Is there adequate sports equipment and supervision available to children during lunch and recess?
What is the discipline policy?
How do students behave in the hallways and outside?
School culture
How diverse is the school population?
How diverse is the staff at the school?
Are kids respectful of each other?
Does the school feel welcoming toward other parents from diverse backgrounds and cultures?
Does the Principal express him/herself in a way that demonstrates his/her understanding of the cultural differences and history of the community?
Staff
Does the Principal speak openly and honestly about issues facing the school?
What is the Principal style and vision for the school and does it resonate with you?
Do teachers appear enthusiastic and knowledgeable?
How are teachers managing their classrooms?
Do students seem engaged in their classes?
Are the staff respectful of kids? Are kids respectful of adults at the school?
Programs
How is art, science, technology and other enrichments incorporated into the school day?
Is there a strong theme or message at the school?
