PPS-SF is a network of parents working together to build and ensure quality public education for all children in San Francisco.
Build and maintain a network of current and prospective public school parents.
Inform effective public education policy development and its implementation.
Encourage public school enrollment and help parents navigate the process.
Develop Parent Leaders from all SF Communities to take a more active role in their schools.
Started in San Francisco in 1999 and part of a national organization of independent community-based chapters, PPS-SF has become a respected and prominent supporter of public education and an advocate for parent engagement in school reform.
By making the complex enrollment process more accessible to all parents and helping to market under enrolled schools, PPS-SF helped reverse a 30 year trend of declining SFUSD enrollment, has increased diversity in numerous schools and has been instrumental in combating San Francisco’s “family flight” epidemic.
When parents are more informed about the educational system at the classroom, school and district levels, they are more likely to be engaged in their child’s education and are more likely to become partners in improving academic achievement. PPS-SF provides parent leadership development training to help parents understand complex systems and gain confidence to get involved.
With its solutions-oriented approach, PPS-SF has been instrumental in providing parent perspective to the development of SFUSD policies and procedures, including organizing and providing key parent input on district policy.
PPS-SF serves more than 50,000 parents each year.
What started off as a grassroots venture by two parents has grown into a network of thousands.
Parents for Public Schools proudly represents a diverse and active network of parents who are involved in building quality public education for all children in San Francisco’s public schools.
