PPS-SF brought parent voices to district policy decisions.
- Delayed the Feeder Pattern proposal in September in order to engage the community in the decision-making process.
- Heard from over 850 parents in March-April to capture input about the quality of our middle schools and K-8 feeder patterns.
- Brought to the forefront issues and recommendations regarding middle school quality.
PPS-SF helped parents enroll in public schools and increase on-time applications.
- Held over 125 enrollment events to highlight the benefits of public schools
- Provided information about the enrollment process and public school options to over 4,500 parents or guardians.
- Helped increase the number of African American and Latino applications by 20% and 17% respectively during the first placement period.
- Trained over 230 preschool directors, librarians and early care providers, so that they can support their networks of parents through the complex enrollment process.
- Trained over 30 parents in three languages to be enrollment coaches.
PPS-SF developed parent leaders and increased parent involvement.
- Parents Transforming their Schools: Three workshops at SF Public Libraries included the following topics: “Effective School Outreach,” “The Fundamentals of School Governance,” and “Parent Tools for Raising Concerns about Your School.”
- Monthly meetings of the Chinese Parent Council and the Latino Parent Club.
- Next Steps Leadership Training helps immigrant parents navigate the school system and build skills.
- School Governance for Parents Training; an 8-part School Site Council training helps parents and educators become partners in improving student achievement at schools.
- “ELAC Made Easy” Training empowered over 400 Chinese and Spanish speaking parents in more than 20 schools to advocate for their children’s education.
- Combated reading loss through Family Activity Days in the Mission and the Bayview Reading Circles during the 2010 summer months.
